Steam / Thermal Coal

Iomi Coal-50 to Iomi Coal-63: GAR-5000, GAR-5500, GAR-5800, GAR-6000 and GAR-6300 Indonesian thermal coal, sold on agreed contractual specifications.

What is thermal coal?

Thermal coal, also called steam coal, is coal burned to raise steam for electricity generation and to provide heat for cement kilns, industrial boilers and other processes. Its value is set mainly by the energy it releases, measured as calorific value in kilocalories per kilogram (kcal/kg).

Indonesian thermal coal is widely used across Asia. It is typically sub-bituminous to bituminous, with moderate to high volatile matter that makes it easy to ignite, and generally low ash and low sulphur, which helps power plants manage emissions and handling costs.

Because moisture varies with the source and weather, calorific value is always quoted on a stated basis. In Indonesian trade the reference is usually GAR (gross as received), while many buyers in China and India also evaluate NAR (net as received). Our product names follow typical GAR: Iomi Coal-50 is GAR-5000, Iomi Coal-55 is GAR-5500, and so on up to Iomi Coal-63 at GAR-6300.

Understanding the parameters

Values are reported on two bases. As Received Basis (ARB) describes the coal as delivered, including all moisture. Air Dried Basis (ADB) describes the coal after surface moisture has evaporated in the laboratory.

ARBAs Received Basis: coal as delivered, including all moisture.
ADBAir Dried Basis: coal after surface moisture has evaporated in the laboratory.
Gross Calorific ValueGAR
Total heat released per kilogram of coal as received, including the heat recovered from condensing water vapour. The main reference for grading and pricing Indonesian coal.
Net As ReceivedNAR
Heat available after deducting the energy used to evaporate moisture. Closer to the useful heat in a boiler and preferred by many power utilities.
Total MoistureTM
All water in the coal as delivered. Higher moisture lowers usable heat and adds weight to freight.
Inherent MoistureIM
Water held within the coal structure after air drying. It reflects the rank of the coal.
Ash ContentASH
Non-combustible residue left after burning. Affects boiler performance, slagging and ash disposal.
Volatile MatterVM
Gases released when coal is heated. High volatile matter gives easy ignition and stable combustion.
Total SulphurTS
Sulphur content, which forms SO₂ when burned. Important for emission limits and equipment corrosion.
Fixed CarbonFC
The solid combustible part of coal, calculated by difference: 100 minus moisture, ash and volatile matter.
Hardgrove Grindability IndexHGI
How easily coal can be pulverized. A higher index means coal is easier to grind for pulverized-fuel boilers.
Size 0–50 mmSize
Share of coal within 0 to 50 mm. A minimum of 85% keeps handling and feeding consistent.
